I am looking at travelling from Christchurch to Queenstown over labour weekend in a campervan. Looking for cool campsites and unofficial spots to stay the night.
Spending 3 nights all up. Christchurch - Fox - Queenstown - Milford - in three nights? Got 4 days. I don't expect it to be indepth. I will be coming back for more time when I have it. I've got airpoints that expire so I'm using them. Would appreciate actual suggestions rather than just criticism. My suggestion fly to Queenstown and what ever you're smoking give it a rest. But it's not possible to drive from Christchurch , to Fox, to Queenstown , to Milford, and back to Queenstown in four days.
Well not safely anyway. Presuming you arrive into Christchurch on the Friday afternoon, and set off to Fox, you'll arrive there some 7 hours later. I'd imagine around midnight. On the Saturday, presuming you set off early to Queenstown, you'll arrive there some six or seven hours later.
The Sunday, I assume will be your Milford Sound day, in a camper van it's about a 5 hour drive one way , and then your return, another 5 hour drive. In the middle of avalanche season I assure you I am not being critical, but I think perhaps you need to reconsider. Can you fly in and out of Queenstown? If your campervan is certified as compliant they check around here there are spots at the end of Lake Pukaki , by the canals out of Twizel and the shores of Lake Dunstan.
I'd forget freedom camping around Queenstown as you will get clamped. Coach tour to Milford Sound way too far for a RT by camper van. I have great flight times so pretty much have 4 full days. Have multiple drivers so driver fatigue is not really an issue.
